Sterling Structural Therapy

(SST) is a new paradigm in chronic pain treatment. This new method relies on you; requiring you to take an active role in order to affect change. Clients receive a comprehensive assessment in both static and dynamic positions. Simple movement interventions are carefully applied along with postural, Gait and functional reeducation. Clients are given simple Self-Care homework exercises between sessions. Each session we reevaluate if our last interventions have proven successful, indicated by the client's steady reduction or disappearance of pain. The first sessions (1- 3) include postural and movement reeducation along with developing the client's Self- Care protocol(homework). Once the client has their Self-Care Protocol and is regularly implementing the protocol in their daily routine, the next sessions focus on slow and precise Fascial (Connective Tissue) Corrections, applied by the Therapist. These Fascial Corrections help speed up the healing process and make the client's Self-Care Protocol even more effective. We believe SST has been effective for so many people because our clients take action, learning to correct faulty movement patterns, changing the way they stand, sit, walk, run, get in and out of a car, hit a golf ball or lift weights. They choose to take an active role in changing their reality.

80 minute sessions

What Is Sterling Structural Therapy (SST)?

SST is an alternative therapeutic treatment for Orthopedic and Neurological conditions.

Alternative in both its approach and in the recommended course of treatment.

SST takes a systemic approach to the evaluation and treatment of Orthopedic and Neurological conditions. It is a Big Picture approach, addressing the whole of a complex structure.

What does a Sterling Structural Therapy session look like?

An SST session involves:
a) Simple corrective exercises that comprise the client's homework routine.

b) Postural Re-education:
Teaching new ways to sit, stand, get in and out of sitting position, sleeping position etc, in order to adopt optimal biomechanics resulting in long term Lifestyle changes.

c) Breath Re-education:
Teaching specific breathing techniques in order to promote Parasympathetic Nervous System activation, which supports Homeostasis and Balance; while inhibiting Sympathetic Nervous System otherwise known as Fight and Flight or Stress Response.

d) At least 50% of each session (except sessions 1 & 2) involves precise Connective Tissue corrections applied to the client by the Therapist.

Can you give me a specific example of how SST is different then the traditional rehabilitative approach?

Here is a comparison of a traditional approach and the SST approach in evaluating and treating an orthopedic condition such as a client presenting with severe left hip pain:

a) The traditional approach would often be to examine the client's left hip using ROM test, muscle testing and various forms of imaging techniques such as MRI, X-ray C.T. scan etc. Come up with a diagnosis for the left hip which would result in a treatment plan for the left hip.

b) The SST alternative approach would be to do a structural evaluation of the entire body of the person with the left hip pain. The evaluation is a head to toes assessment in both static and dynamic positions. The assessment is done by looking, palpating and asking the client for specific feedback. We then come up with a result oriented treatment plan that addresses the client's whole body; Addressing the root cause and not just the affected "Symptomatic" left hip.

Examples of specific hip conditions treated successfully with SST:
1) labrum tear
2) Hip necrosis
3) Piriformis syndrome
4) Hip bursitis
5) Osteoporosis and Paget's disease
6) Arthritis (osteoarthritis and rheumatoid)
7) Hip pain resulting from spinal Stenosis

How is SST different from other alternative therapeutic modalities such as Rolfing/Structural Integration, Acupuncture, Yoga Therapy, Osteopathy, Massage, Craniosacral therapy and many others?

a) SST is different because it uses a unilateral strategy in order to restore balance.

This is THE biggest difference.
This approach is based on the concept that if your WHOLE body is out of balance, with one side "locked short" and dominant while the other side is "locked long" and weakened/passive. This creates imbalances in your entire system/body causing various forms of pain, injury and dysfunction. If we were to create an action plan that works both sides equally... this would simply allow the entire system to stay in its dysfunction and remain unbalanced. The client is therefore given side specific exercises and/or stretches based on the side specific structural imbalances they have presented with, stretching only one side while strengthening only the opposite side. This results in promoting a well balanced efficient and high functioning system; in other words pain & dysfunction are transformed into wellbeing, optimal biomechanics and a higher physical/athletic capacity.

b) SST is different because each treatment combines both active and passive techniques.

This simply means that the course of treatment combines active exercises and stretches done by the client both during the session and as a homework routine; These are supported and enhanced by slow and precise connective tissue corrections, applied by the Therapist which are a passive technique applied to the client.

c) SST is different because it is based on a Partnership model between the client and therapist, as opposed to a patient simply receiving treatment.

In other words we partner with our clients with a focus on empowerment and education where the client themselves plays an integral and very active role in the treatment by doing their homework, and changing a lifetime of "interesting" postural and biomechanical patterns that have resulted from and/or contribute to their discomfort/pain.

Sterling Structural Therapy

Sterling Structural Therapy (SST) is a new paradigm in chronic pain treatment. This new method does not rely on rigid treatment protocols that will be applied to you. It relies on you; requiring you the client to take an active role in order to affect change.

Chronic pain (especially chronic back and neck pain) is practically an epidemic in our society; why are so many people suffering? We believe people experience chronic pain because they are chronically doing things that are harmful to them, and often times are not even aware of it.

Unbalanced Postural habits, prolonged sitting, physical trauma such as an accident or a fall and a fitness industry focused on aesthetics as opposed to function, have resulted in people thinking/ feeling that pain is just a normal part of life and aging.

SST offers clients the opportunity to take back the control over their bodies, and positively affect their quality of life; both short and long term.

The reason SST has been effective for so many people, is because our clients literally change their lives, the way they stand, sit, walk, run, get in and out of a chair, hit a golf ball or lift weights. They realize, with our guidance, what they had been doing that resulted in pain, and have chosen to take an active role in changing their reality.

Sterling Structural Therapy addresses the whole body, we take a look at your structure from head to toes, in order to make sure we are not simply addressing a symptom, but looking to address the root cause. You are not a “Rotator Cuff” a “Herniated Disc” a “Sciatica” or “Plantar Fasciitis”. Nothing in the human Body exists nor functions by itself; rather it interacts reacts and balances in a beautifully intricate way with the rest of you.

Clients receive a comprehensive assessment in both static and dynamic positions. Simple movement interventions are carefully applied along with postural, Gait and functional reeducation. Clients are given simple Self-Care homework exercises between sessions. Each session we reevaluate if our last interventions have proven successful, indicated by the client experiencing a steady reduction or disappearance of pain.

The first 2-3 sessions include postural and movement reeducation along with developing the client's Self-Care protocol(homework). Once the client has their Self-Care Protocol and is regularly implementing the protocol in their daily routine, the next sessions focus on slow and precise Fascial Corrections, applied by the Therapist. These Fascial Corrections help speed up the healing process and make the client's Self-Care Protocol even more effective.

If you would like to take an active role in your wellbeing and want to take back control over your body Sterling Therapy is the method for you.

When fascia becomes imbalanced resulting postural changes can occur that contribute to musculoskeletal and chronic pain. I have referred over 30 patients with a variety of skeletal, orthopedic and pain issues, the success of Sterling Structural therapy in making them pain-free is phenomenal!

I am one of their clients and can attest that I no longer have any neck or low back pain from prior  athletic injuries. I highly recommend the Sterling Structural Therapy Team

Andrea Chilcote

My work with Sterling Structural Therapy has improved my well being and literally changed my body structure. I am pain free after years of chronic pain and have built strength that enables me to engage in a highly active life without risk of injury.

The Sterling Structural Therapy staff both gifted and skilled, drawing on extensive knowledge and at the same time always using an individualized approach. They simultaneously know my body’s limitations as well as its potential. Most important, I trust them.

Shari Flatt

Structural Therapy does not begin to describe this work. Over the years I have tried many various Therapeutic modalities and have never had the privilege of Therapists as highly educated as the Sterling Structural Therapy team.

I have referred them numerous times to my friends whom have all greatly benefited from their knowledge and expertise.

There is no "group think" at Sterling Structural Therapy. each session is customizes for the individual .For strengthening or physical problems, I can promise you ,you won't be sorry you came to Sterling Structural Therapy.

Tina

I began working with the Sterling Structural Therapy team almost 12 months ago to alleviate lower back pain, which had been “managed” with a dose of chiropractor visits, yoga, and other forms of stretching. As a relatively active and health conscious person, I thought Sterling Structural Therapy may offer some additional insights on how to alleviate my chronic back pain. What I found working with Sterling Structural Therapy was not only a way to alleviate pain but also, more important to a type A, how to expand my athletic abilities. Over the past 20 years, I worked out regularly at a gym, and hiked 2-3 times per week. Due to my back pain, however, I was guided to stay away from running. This year, after using Sterling Structural Therapy to strengthen and achieve better alignment overall, I ran two 5K’s just breaking 8 minute miles – pain free. I learned how to integrate stretching in my life to support my alignment and enhance my performance as a middle aged athlete. This year, instead of worrying about what I can do physically, I’m looking forward to breaking 7 minute miles - thanks so much Sterling Structural Therapy!!

Larry Niederhofer

I came to Sterling Structural Therapy after sleeping in a lazy boy for six weeks with severe sciatica, suffering from drop foot resulting from lumbar stenosis.

I am now sleeping in bed, have improved my posture and golf game and can now put on my socks in the morning.

Carolyn & Peter Jackson

Sterling Structural Therapy is THE Best! My husband & I both work with the Sterling Structural Therapy team and have seen great improvement in our golf game and mobility. Highly recommend them! Carolyn & Peter Jackson

DC

At Sterling Structural Therapy you feel immediately welcome and at home. This is a wellness-based atmosphere combined with true professionalism and warmth My personal testimonial goes back to early 2008. I began working with Sterling Structural Therapy after having experienced two life threatening accidents. My body was a total mess and completely out of balance. As I continued my sessions and increased my commitment to my homework I continued to improve greatly. due to this focus and commitment I would never need hip or knee replacement as I was not wearing my body out from horrific posture that causes over compensation on my joints and bones. It is now over 3 and 1/2 years later and I LOVE how I feel and have recommended Sterling Structural Therapy to all I know.

Elyse

I have been working with the Sterling Structural Therapy team since February 2009, and I love what it is doing for me. My body is more flexible and in better alignment. Most of all my Posture has improved immensely. I believe the better you carry yourself the better you look and feel. All these changes have improved my quality of life.

Lisa

The Sterling Structural Therapy team have serious knowledge of anatomy//kinesiology and biomechanics principles they use this to bring out the best in each client's form and function. Under their tutelage I experienced profound changes in my body, greater awareness, ease of movement and achievement of physical goals I had previously believed my body was unable to reach. Amazing! These are five-star therapists running a five-star clinic!

Ruth Horn M.D. Montreal Canada

Prior to working with Sterling Structural Therapy I had lumbar back surgery, since I have been working with the Sterling Structural Therapy team I have never had pain again. My posture is improved and I am aware of my body position at all times. I am a physician and I can truly say that Dana Sterling has earned her MD! She is more knowledgeable than many orthopedic surgeons I know!

Karolin Metivier, figure skater, Quebec Canada

I've been working with Dana for four years. after a couple of sessions my entire body, and specially my back was feeling so much better. I’m a full time figure skater and my sport causes me a lot of muscle pain and tensions. My work with Dana gave me the strength, stability and the flexibility I needed to jump and perform on the ice, without the risk of injury. Doing structural therapy really helped me to better understand my body and learn how to breath and move efficiently while performing. Working with Dana is always a real pleasure because she adapts herself to her client and is always finding solutions to my physical problems.

Pat & Micky

The treatment plan at Sterling Structural Therapy is nothing short of miraculous . Personally I have suffered for years with plantar fasciitis in both feet and within a couple of sessions the pain decreased significantly, it is now 100% gone. I can walk 18 holes of golf without residual pain at night. My wife has bone on bone in both knees, through their program she completely eliminated pain and is now able to do hour long hikes on a daily basis. We both look forward to our once a week session as our bodies and quality of life continue to change for the better.

Connie Schaap

I have been a client at Sterling Structural Therapy for over a year. I have scoliosis which through the sheer nature of the condition causes the body to compensate for the spinal curves in troublesome ways. Sterling Structural therapy enabled me to improve my walking gait and my posture, I am aware of how my body compensates for the scoliosis and am able to make corrections when I notice I am doing something that causes pain. I also have homework training exercises I perform at home. Sterling Structural Therapy provides a positive and encouraging environment for physical self improvement. It was my lucky day when I called and scheduled an appointment at Sterling Structural Therapy.

Linda Davis

I am a snowbird from Illinois. It was a great day when I found Sterling Structural Therapy as it has been life changing. With a lifetime of poor posture and now Rheumatoid Arthritis, the Sterling Structural Therapy team has worked with me to balance the muscles needed to improve my posture. When I arrived they worked within my limitations until I no longer had them. The clinic is immaculate and peaceful. When I return to Illinois for the summer the Sterling Structural Therapy team communicated with my therapists back home to help me continue our work. When I leave their clinic I feel taller and more energized. Most importantly, they never fail to inspire me to "live my best life."

Barbara Kirr

Why I chose Sterling Structural Therapy?

I had excruciating pain in my neck and right shoulder.  I was diagnosed with cervical facet syndrome.  After weeks of doctor appointments, physical therapy, cortisone shots, massage, and finally 2 surgical treatments of lidocaine shots in my neck, I was barely mildly better. When one is in constant pain it saps one of energy as well as affects our emotional and mental state. I was referred to Sterling Structural Therapy by my Physician. My sessions have been with Cody Williams, a young man with a steady, calming maturity that instilled immediate confidence in his abilities to get me feeling well again. I have been going once a week for 14 weeks and I am so much better that I can live my life again. I am diligent about doing my homework, I do the exercises about 15 times every day- morning, noon and late afternoon and I never miss a day!  Why?  Because I feel good when I do my program and I never want to go back to where I was. I feel rejuvenated, I can do most of my activities, enjoy my family and friends, It can’t get much better than that!

Michelle Nicholas

For 3 years, I have suffered with lower back pain caused by  herniated discs and arthritis of the facet joint. I felt like I had a steel plate in my spine. I have been through injections, physical therapy (2X), muscle manipulation and lots of daily pain pills. I was in constant stabbing pain. Could not stand or sit for long periods of time. My friend kept telling me I should go to Sterling Structural Therapy, I finally went and wished I had gone 2 years sooner! The Sterling Structural Therapy team really listened to my problems and concerns and gave me a personal evaluation. From there, with their guidance, I learned new techniques to help my body and undo the years of damage, tension and tightness caused by my back problems. I did my "homework" faithfully and after 6 weeks, I am amazed at how great I was feeling. My steel plate turned to clay first and now, I barely feel anything. All stabbing pains stopped, my hip pain decreased greatly. By 9 weeks, I stopped taking daily pain pills. I was thrilled! Finally, a therapy program that worked. I can now hike 3-4 miles with out any pain. I do my homework at least 4-5 times a day. I start while putting on my makeup in the morning and continue all day, at work, on my breaks and finish  at home. If you have chronic pain go to Sterling Structural Therapy! You will be so happy you did. Thank you to the Sterling Structural Therapy team for all your help.
